Our staff searched some of the Web sites of universities and found there are many wonderful, plain-English explanations of the chiral phenomenon. To quote from the Internet Web site of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Biochemistry Department on the subject of stereochemistry, under which chiral compounds are studied:
"Stereochemistry is the study of molecules in three dimensions. The major factor influencing whether or not inorganic chemical reactions will proceed is temperature. In biological reactions, the shape of the molecules is more important."
In other words, health and skin care products ('biological reactions') that do not take chirality of their ingredients into consideration run the risk of mixing the wonderful effects of the one molecular 'hand' with the adverse side-effects of the other 'hand'. That same MIT site says the following:
"Your right hand won't fit properly into a left-handed glove, and an amino acid of the wrong shape won't fit into an enzyme".
This is the reason why the chiral resolution (separation) of AZT is significant, since the drug is designed to 'fit' and block reverse transcriptase, one of the enzymes HIV needs to replicate.
In biology, shape definitely matters.
How does this apply to skin care?
In comparison to the preceding information on university-level biochemistry, most skin care products have not progressed beyond the 'high school' standard. Why? Because they do not address the fundamental chirality of human skin. Since chiral purity is the evolutionary destiny of Mankind, then most skin care as you know it is mired in the proverbial Dark Ages.
If your skin care products do not take into account the shape of its active ingredients it cannot hope to have the proper effect on a highly evolved, complex biochemical organ that is your skin, whose very structure is chiral.
